Hypha Studios

Bringing arts and culture to our towns.

Camilla Cole, the founder of Hypha Studios, established the organisation four years ago during the pandemic. With a background in contemporary art rather than property, Camilla’s role involves brokering relationships between landlords and artists, providing artists with free spaces in exchange for hosting free events for local communities.

Hypha Studios, is an arts charity which operates nationally across England, Scotland, and Wales, revitalising local high streets and engaging local communities by repurposing vacant properties, reducing costs for landlords, and delivering positive social impact.

The organisation has been keen to collaborate with Ashford due to the council’s progressive attitude towards culture on the high street, the untapped creative potential in the area and the proximity to London. Camilla discovered Ashford’s potential through extensive research and communication with landlords and local councils, including Chris Dixon (Arts, Culture and Heritage Manager) at Ashford Borough Council, who highlighted the various festivals and events held in Ashford.

Hypha Studios works with a diverse range of stakeholders, including private landlords, local councils, and a network of 7-800 artists at any given time, they can be individuals or groups of artists.

Camilla highlighted: “the positive aspects of Ashford include its warm welcome, willingness to collaborate, and the support of Ashford Borough Council for businesses in the borough”.

“I am so excited to be coming to Ashford and start working with local creatives and engaging the wider community with our free event programme. We hope this will be the first site of many, and are keen to unlock Ashford’s cultural potential and activate this space for community benefit!”
