National Press Interest in Screen Ashford

Posted on 28 July 2025

The national press have been reporting on Screen Ashford’s scheme to nurture a new generation of filmmakers and creatives, with the BBC previewing the event on Wednesday 30th July.

Screen Ashford, an initiative developed in partnership between Screen South and Ashford Borough Council (ABC), is dedicated to supporting the growth of the local film industry and nurturing emerging filmmakers in the region following its official launch in 2024.

In recognition of local cinematic talent, a special event has been organised to create opportunities in filmmaking, including a short film competition for directors and artists based in Kent.

At this complimentary event, three short films produced by local artists will be screened, followed by question-and-answer sessions with the filmmakers and opportunities for professional networking.

Screen Ashford’s previous activities have included film workshops, public screenings, and a 48-hour film challenge wherein participants were required to plan, shoot, and edit their entries within two days.

These activities have reached over 1,500 participants across Ashford, with a focus on young people aged 14–35 and underrepresented groups.

Additionally, ABC has facilitated the development of a grassroots screen hub at The Ashford Cinema in Elwick Place, further strengthening the area’s creative infrastructure.

Funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) is used to support the year-round programme.
