Heritage Railway Embraces Solar Innovation
Posted on 6 March 2026In a forward-thinking move to achieve sustainability targets and lessen environmental impact, Kent & East Sussex Railway has unveiled its latest station upgrade, powered by a grant from Ashford Borough Council. This ambitious project reflects the railway’s commitment to responsible stewardship and environmental progress.
Securing a Rural Energy Transition grant of £14,740, awarded through the Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund, the railway has invested in solar panels for Tenterden Town Station. This funding marks a significant step towards integrating renewable energy solutions into heritage operations.
The solar array, carefully positioned atop the Carriage & Wagon Shed extension completed in 2012, was designed to respect the station’s historical character. The installation seamlessly blends with the surroundings, ensuring the iconic station buildings maintain their authentic charm.
Energy produced by the panels now powers the Carriage and Wagon workshop—home to vital restoration and maintenance of historic rolling stock—as well as the station’s buffet and its noteworthy signal box. Any surplus electricity is exported back to the National Grid. With the investment expected to pay for itself within 18 months, the railway anticipates saving approximately £7,000 annually on energy costs.
As guardians of a remarkable 10.5-mile nature corridor, Kent & East Sussex Railway collaborates with Kent Wildlife Trust and the Bumble Bee Conservation Trust to protect an array of endangered species, including nightingales, yellow hammers, bats, and the rare ruderal bumble bee. These efforts are underpinned by a comprehensive two-year nature survey.
Beyond energy innovation, the railway’s forestry and environment team has planted around 3,000 trees, including disease-resistant elms, on railway land. Recent initiatives have seen the regeneration of a pond at Rolvenden, attracting increased wildlife and supporting biodiversity, such as goldfinches.
This blend of heritage preservation and environmental responsibility positions Kent & East Sussex Railway as a leader in sustainable tourism, ensuring future generations can enjoy both remarkable railway experiences and thriving local ecosystems.
We are very grateful to Ashford Borough Council for this Government-funded grant, which has enabled us to use green technology to reduce both our energy costs and our carbon footprint. Every heritage business is facing these dual challenges at the moment, and we are no exception particularly as there is still no viable alternative to coal for running steam trains.
We couple our passion for keeping authentic transport heritage alive and accessible to visitors with a desire to operate in as sustainable a way as possible, with consideration for the environment around us.
