Chapel Down Unveils New 119-Acre Vineyard
Posted on 24 June 2025To mark English Wine Week (21 to 29 June), Chapel Down have announced a new 119-acre vineyard on the Kent Downs that is believed to have potential as a significant vineyard in England.
Buckwell Vineyard, located near the village of Wye, was planted last year. It sits on chalk soils and benefits from south and southeast-facing slopes, providing extended sunshine hours and favourable conditions for growing sparkling wine grapes. The site includes 92-acres of Chardonnay and 27-acres of Pinot Noir, both intended for Chapel Down’s sparkling wines. The first harvest is expected in autumn 2027.
The development of Buckwell also reflects Chapel Down’s commitment to sustainable viticulture. The site uses specialist weeding equipment to minimise soil disturbance and herbicide use. This approach aligns with regenerative agriculture principles and contributes to improved soil health and reduced environmental impact.
Buckwell Vineyard is an important addition to our estate. With its location on the Kent Downs, chalk soils, and a unique microclimate, it has the potential to be a notable vineyard

This initiative not only strengthens Chapel Down’s portfolio but also brings significant benefits to the Ashford Borough. The transition of the site from arable farming to viticulture supports local employment opportunities, as viticulture is known to employ more people per hectare compared to traditional farming. Additionally, the vineyard’s presence is expected to enhance the region’s reputation as a hub for premium English winemaking, attracting tourism and investment to the area. This aligns with the borough’s vision of fostering sustainable economic growth while preserving its rural charm.
Kent is a significant region for English winemaking, and Chapel Down’s expanding vineyard portfolio highlights its commitment to the area. With the addition of Buckwell Vineyard, the producer now has 1,018 acres under vine, equivalent to approximately one-tenth of the UK’s total vineyard acreage. Its Kit’s Coty estate on the Kent Downs is recognised for producing award-winning single estate wines, including Kit’s Coty Coeur de Cuvée 2016 and Kit’s Coty Chardonnay 2021.

Chapel Down’s winery is based in Tenterden and is open to visitors throughout the year for tours, tastings, and wine experiences. The estate also includes a wine shop and The Swan, a two AA rosette restaurant that features seasonal British food.
