Chance to show Ashford your etchings with new Elwick Place initiative

Ashford’s citizens are being offered the opportunity to leave a lasting mark on the town thanks to a creative initiative being launched this week at the Elwick Place cinema and hotel development.

The Elwick Etchings initiative, put together by Elwick Place developers Stanhope and public arts company Strange Cargo, is calling on local residents to come forward with their personal stories of living in Ashford, as well as interesting facts about the town centre. These memories will then be etched into granite slabs and placed into what will be the pavements around Elwick Place.

Three 8ft panels with contact information for the Etchings team will be going up on the hoardings around the Elwick Place site on Wednesday, January 17th 2018. Anyone with interesting memories, quirky facts, or unique stories about Ashford should get in touch with the team to have them preserved as an important part of the town centre.

Anyone who wants to share their Ashford stories can send them:

  • via Email,

  • by post to: Strange Cargo c/o Elwick Place Site Office, Lendlease site office, Elwick Place, Elwick Road, Ashford, TN23 1PF,

  • by telephone on: 01303 278821.

Gary Bourne, Development Director at Stanhope, said:

“We’re really pleased to be a part of this initiative; it’s going to give people living in Ashford a chance to leave a lasting mark on this part of the town centre. The team are especially looking forward to hearing the stories people have to share and seeing them immortalised in the stone around Elwick Place for future generations to enjoy.”

Elwick Place Leisure Centre

Construction at Elwick Place started in the summer of 2017, with the project scheduled to open at the end of 2018. The development will deliver a brand new 897-seat boutique Picturehouse cinema, along with a 58-bed Travelodge family hotel. The new major mixed-use destination will also provide:

• Eight new restaurant/cafes,

• A new 282-space car park,

• A further potential phase of residential providing up to 200 apartments.

The scheme is one element of a wider £519 million of investment in developments in Ashford town centre currently under construction or with construction expected to start within the next 5 years, building on the town’s unique position with its high-speed rail route to Central London and Europe. Elwick Place will provide for this extensive visitor catchment, while also serving Ashford’s growing population, one of the fast growing towns in the South East.
