Macknade Fine Foods
One of the country’s leading food halls, Macknade Fine Foods is a six-generation family business based in Faversham, Kent. Frederick Neame Snr started the business in 1847 and for the first 150 years Macknade remained focussed on farming until 1979 when Patricia Neame and Renato Cuomo took a small holding and the farm shop began.
Over the past 40 years the business has grown from a small pick-your-own farm shop to the 10,000 sqft food hall that it is today. As the business continues to evolve and develop, Macknade Fine Foods has now set its sights on Ashford, with plans to open a new food and drink hub at Elwick Place.
Retail is the focus of the Faversham location, but the concept for Macknade at Elwick Place is primarily food service. The new site will encompass a café, butchery bar, salad bar and delicatessen, with some premium retail.
Stefano Cuomo, Managing Director of Macknade Fine Foods, explains what brought Macknade to Ashford: “I have seen how Ashford has grown and moved forward over the past decade, which aligns with us as a business as we are scaling up and taking ourselves forward. We have had a lot of support from Ashford Borough Council and other stakeholders within the town. We thought the way Ashford was going with the excitement around it and the strength of the food and drink offering, meant that it was a good location for us to get involved in.”

“Kent as a whole is the garden of England and what Ashford has is particularly good access within the county and beyond. A number of our suppliers are based in Ashford already, with the likes of Chapel Down and & Bloss Coffee. The town has a really strong food and drink heritage, with Elwick Place the site of the market in the town, which is absolutely essential and keeps in with Macknade as a brand. What we’re looking to do is create a strong food and drink community here in Ashford.”
